“House of Boys” is the passionate, dramatic journey of Frank, a high-school kid, who is hot, good-looking, has just made his coming-out and is proudly enjoying his young sexuality. The year is 1984 and the freedom of lifestyle has its highlights.
Driven by his adventurous urge for easy-living and all-night dancing, Frank runs away with his friend Rita from the looming final exams. They head for Amsterdam, where Frank quickly finds his fulfilment in a male cabaret as he is surrounded by the most colourful and extravagant birds of the night in an exciting world of sex and music.
Madame, the eccentric owner, gives the most glamorous performances and runs the House of Boys very firmly. He is assisted by Emma, who also acts as a guardian angel to the boys. Then, there are the other dancers: Angelo, the comic, who is saving for his sex operation; Dean, a punk and tagger: Herman, a doomed street kid and Jake, Frank’s room-mate, a gorgeous American dancer, who becomes Frank’s best friend. Frank obviously wants more, but there is Carol, Jake’s girlfriend.
But events go as quick as life, as the two friends become lovers and Frank lives his very first true feelings: “The Power of Love”, high-lighted during a night at a Frankie Goes to Hollywood concert. However, the romantic euphoria abruptly collapses when Jake is diagnosed with AIDS, an almost unknown new disease, referred to as the ‘gay cancer’.
Rejected from the House of Boys, Frank and Jake are living with Emma and they have to build up an enormous courage in their impossible fight for survival. Supported by the hospital crew around Dr. Marsh, comforted by Dean and Angelo, be-mothered by Emma, Frank never leaves his friend’s side until, Jake dies almost in his lover’s arms.
The dramatic ending turns into a cry for life and hope, when Frank and Carol travel to Morocco. It turns out to be a journey through the magnificence of nature, where they show Jake their deepest love by fulfilling his lifelong dream of one day visiting Essaouira…
il titolo del film inganna sicuramente, si pensa subito a qualcosa di “leggero”, ma andando avanti con i minuti la trama diventa un po più ‘particolare’, non tanto però da renderlo un bel film. In parte noioso, senza senso, si capisce solo verso la fine cosa effettivamente voleva cercare di raccontarci il regista, ma senza riuscirci al meglio. Non ho capito il senso dei “capitoli” e non mi sono piaciuti gli attori.
il film è carino, nonostante si abbia l’impressione che qualcosa rimanga in sospeso..comunque è in inglese (fatto un po’ disorientante, per la verità) e non in tedesco.
