Con le candidature degli Spirits Award si entra nel pieno della stagione dei premi per i film usciti nel 2009 (ancora un anno d’oro per il cinema gay) che terminerà con l’82ma cerimonia degli Oscar del 7 marzo 2010 (le candidature verranno annunciate il 2 febbraio 2010).
Gli Spirit Awards, che quest’anno celebrano il 25mo anniversario, verranno assegnati il 5 marzo 2010 a Los Angeles e trasmessi dal canale IFC (Independent Film Channel). Gli Spirit Awards sono i più importanti premi del circuito indipendente, che ogni anno celebrano i piccoli film (dal 2005 sono ammessi solo quelli con un budget inferiore ai venti milioni di dollari) più meritevoli della stagione. Sono organizzati dall’associazione no-profit Film Indipendent che ha come scopo la promozione e il supporto del cinema e degli autori impegnati nell’innovazione e nell’originalità.
Lo scorso anno vinse “The Wrestler” di Darren Aronofsky (attualmente impegnato in un altro film a tematica, “Black Swan”) come miglior film e attore protagonista, mentre “Milk” di Gus Van Sant portò a casa due premi, attore non protagonista (James Franco) e sceneggiatura d’esordio (Dustin Lance Black).
Quest’anno guadagna ben 5 candidature il film “Precious” di Lee Daniels (miglior film, regia, sceneggiatura esordiente, protagonista e non protagonista femminile), dove abbiamo un importante ruolo lesbico, in una toccante storia di abuso, bullismo ed emarginazione. Tre candidature vanno all’opera prima di Tom Ford “Un uomo solo” (già premiato a Venezia con la coppa Volpi al protagonista Colin Firth e il Queer Lion) che ottiene il miglior film d’esordio, la miglior sceneggiatura d’esordio e la miglior interpretazione maschile (Colin Firth), tutte candidature assai pesanti e di buon auspicio anche per gli Oscar.
Un’altra candidatura importante è stata ottenuta dal film a tematica “Humpday” di Lynn Shelton (da noi verrà distribuito dalla Archibald di Vania Traxler Protti che nel 2010 distribuirà anche il suddetto “Un uomo solo”, “Gordos” di Daniel Sanchez Arevalo e “Life During Wartime”, tutti film con tematiche gay). “Humpday” è candidato al prestigioso “John Cassavetes Award” che viene assegnato a regista, sceneggiatore e produttore del miglior film fatto con un budget inferiore a 500.000 dollari.
