LONGHORNS (2011, USA, David Lewis) travels back to Texas, 1982, where the world is ruled by big hair, synth-pop and cowboy boots. Kevin (Jacob Newton) is a straight, frat-boy who enjoys bonding with his fellow schoolmates; besides, it’s all about helping a buddy out, right? When he encounters Cesar (Derek Villanueva) an openly gay student, Kevin’s heart starts to flutter for the young man, setting off a chain of events where sexual identity comes into question and a weekend fueled by beers, straight porn and sexual frustration will lead to multiple bed-hopping and questions about which side of the fence some of these “longhorns” sit on! The film also stars Dylan Vox (Titanic 2, “The Lair”), Kevin Held, Stephen Matzke (Go Go Reject), Bonnie Marion, Katrina Sherwood and Sophia Revelli.

Hitting a much, much lighter note, David Lewis’s low-budget, independent feature Longhorns is a lusty lark set in an ’80s dorm at the University of Texas at Austin. It’s a smiling, smirking look at male bravado that comes out of the world of Friday Night Lights football, where scoring with girls (and bragging about it) is a sign of status. In such a setting, of course, the homosexual Kevin (the likable Jacob Newton) must not only conceal the fact, and deny it to himself, but act even more aggressively macho.
Lewis’s amusing conceit is that every Texas stud we meet is at least bisexual, if not outright gay. (Hmmm. Maybe that’s the source of the underlying tension in Terence Malick’s Texas-set The Tree of Life.) The crux of the matter in Longhorns is that all the guys are hiding the same secret from each other. A kiss serves to throw their self-denial into relief: No matter what you do in bed with another man, you’re not gay unless your lips lock.
Longhorns needs a little more plot to put it squarely in the end zone (don’t we love our double entendres) but its many pleasures include winning performances and original songs by H.P. Mendoza (Colma: The Musical). Avowedly audience-friendly, the movie shamelessly includes gratuitous nudity but, interestingly, the love scenes are suggestive rather than revealing (and much funnier as a result). Birre, manzi … e un paio di finocchi. Gli anni Ottanta sono tornati ruggire di nuovo, in questa commedia un po ‘audace e sexy che coinvolge un gruppo di ragazzi del Texas. Una baracca isolata sulle colline e un sacco di birre, che darà a questi cowboy un esperienza nuova. (Corriere.it)
l film torna indietro nel tempo, esattamente nel Texas, anno 1982, in cui sono di moda i capelli lunghi, la synth-pop e gli stivali da cowboy.
Kevin incontra Cesar, uno studente dichiaratamente gay, a questo punto il cuore di Kevin comincia ad aprirsi per il giovane, scatenando una catena di eventi, in cui l’identità sessuale viene messa in discussione.
Finchè, un week end a base di birra, i due cominceranno a parlare di sesso, della frustrazione sessuale di Kevin, che li farà finire nello stesso letto. (MyMovies.it)
Nel più omofobico stato US un gruppo di studenti (anno 1982) è più o meno gay o quantomeno bi, ma tutti ostentano un machismo di facciata. Masturbazioni reciproche , blowjobs e così via : ma , God save their souls , niente baci sulla bocca , sarebbe una cosa da froci….

Poteva essere un film molto divertente ma le solite costrizioni low budget hanno appiattito tutto. Sopratutto nella scelta degli attori : la recitazione è veramente modesta. Nell’insieme una commedia più teatrale che cinematografica con risultati molto molto sottotono. Voto 6.
