FLASH:
Parliamo delle belle sorprese che abbiamo trovato guardando il film, anche se poche e insufficenti ad alzare il giudizio complessivo sul film. Anzitutto il fatto che anche in questo film, Allen trovi il modo di inserire personaggi e riferimenti LGBT. Si tratta di pochi ma divertenti minuti, quando il personaggio di Ellen Page, la seduttrice Monica, dichiara di essersi appena separata dal marito perchè, in quanto gay, era bravissimo, intelligente e sensibile di giorno ma del tutto incapace la notte. Il fatto che fosse gay, dice lei, non dovrebbe scandalizzare nessuno, e a riprova di ciò, lei stessa si rivela bisessuale raccontando che ha avuto una 'splendida' storia d'amore lesbico durata ben tre mesi, esperienza che l'ha pienamente soddisfatta ed entusiasmata. Questo suo discorsetto, che lascia allibiti i suoi interlocutori, sembra proprio un panegirico pro gay, tanto che lei stessa, ammette poi di avere esagerato un po'. Ma noi intanto ci siamo sorpresamente divertiti. Un altro piacevole rilievo è merito dell'attore gay dichiarato Leo Gullotta che doppia Woody Allen in maniera più che perfetta, tanto da farci credere che Allen sia sempre lo stesso, anche dopo la dipartita del grande Lionello. Poi ci ha fatto piacere ritrovare l'attore Alessandro Tiberi, qui al massimo della sua espressività, che avevamo conosciuto in uno dei primi ruoli gay da semi-protagonista della nostra tv, l'assistente Lucio Spasimo nella miniserie "Quo Vadis, Baby?". E altrettanto possiamo dire per Alison Pill, qui nel ruolo della turista americana Hayley, che avevamo apprezzato come pioniera dell'attivismo lesbico in "Milk". Un breve cameo viene dedicato alla fine del film anche agli stilisti Domenico Dolce e Stefano Gabbana, icone mondiali dello stile italiano.

CRITICA:
"... So, to the story, or rather stories. Firstly, we have young American tourist Hayley (Alison Pill), who falls in love with the dashing Michelangelo (Flavio Parenti), an earnest socialist lawyer. They want to marry; the parents meet. Enter Jerry and Phyllis (Allen and Judy Davis) - he a retired avant-garde opera director, she a psychiatrist. Adversely, Michelangelo's mamma is a swarthy housewife and his dad a funeral director Giancarlo (Fabio Armiliato). Jokes about analysis and death abound, much to the audience's pleasure and profound relief.
Also visiting Rome is John Foy (Alec Baldwin), a successful architect famous for designing shopping malls. Foy used to live in Rome and wants to lap up the atmosphere, abandoning his group and running into Jack (Jesse Eisenberg), a young architect who lives in John's old stomping ground. John acts as Jack's conscience and sage, offering advice and pearls of hard-won wisdom to the young man, who has fallen madly in love with his girlfriend Sally's (Greta Gerwig) best friend, Monica (Ellen Page).
The remaining two storylines involve young country mice Antonio and Milly (Alessandro Tiberi and Alessandra Mastronardi), offered the opportunity to come and live in the big city. Milly gets hopelessly lost before finding herself on a film set, whilst Antonio is caught in a compromising position with a prostitute, Anna (Penélope Cruz). Finally, there's Roberto Benigni, Italy's most beloved clown, as a Roman office employee randomly chosen by the media to have fame foisted upon him. Predictably, he hates the attention when he is in the spotlight, but craves it when it's gone.
Benigni's storyline holds true for the majority of those found in To Rome with Love. The characters are drawn to unpredictable situations and dalliances with danger (whether fame or forbidden trysts) only to choose the safer option with a wistful glance at what could have been. But just what is Allen trying to do with his latest effort? Is he pondering the meaning of fame and society's obsession with celebrity? Should we just focus on the love stories, because this is, after all, a rom-com - Allen's acerbic one-liners notwithstanding?
The truth is, we never really care about any of the youthful characters as they are entrenched in a series of storylines that lack truth. Whilst not expecting gritty realism, we still want characters we can believe in. To Rome with Love, like Allen's Jerry, lacks backbone. It also lacks a scrupulous editor and a decent script. The Italian contingent contains knife-wielding housewives, whore-mongers and sexy secretaries, which - given the recent shenanigans of its erstwhile leader - is unsurprising, yet still disappointing..."
