Willa Cather (1873-1947) è la prima scrittrice omosessuale a ricevere nel 1923 il premio Pulitzer (istituito per testamento da J. Pulitzer nel 1919)per il racconto "One for Ours". Nata in Virginia, si trasferisce nel 1883 con la famiglia in Nebraska dove si laurea nel 1895. Scrive parecchi racconti e romanzi, il suo motto era che l'arte non poteva essere estranea alla vita. In alcuni scritti affronta il problema delle relazioni omosessuali e delle difficoltà per l'omofobia incalzante ("Paul's Case", 1905). I critici contemporanei cercarono sempre di evitare di parlare della sua omosessualità, anche se i suoi libri erano quasi sempre scritti da un punto di vista maschile. Portava i capelli cortissimi e abiti maschili, ebbe diverse amanti tra le quali Edith Lewis, che scrisse poi una sua biografia "Villa Cather Living" (1953) e morì nel 1972 nello stesso appartamento dove avevano abitato insieme per 40 anni.
